L’Arche St. Louis: Assistant (Direct Support Professional)

L’Arche St. Louis is a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities. Beyond a care provider licensed by the State of Missouri, L’Arche is committed to helping change the way people with intellectual disabilities are seen – they are our friends and neighbors, contributing to society and enriching the world.

Brief Job Description (responsibilities, expectations, etc):

The Assistant will be responsible for helping adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities with daily life. This may include preparing and sharing meals with core members and other Assistants; passing medications (after becoming Medication Administration Level 1 certified); helping with hygiene routines (showering and/or toileting); helping core members achieve their goals; driving core members to appointments, jobs, day programs, family events, church, exercise facilities, and social gatherings (and staying and engaging with core member during these things); encouraging some core members to do physical therapy at home; light cleaning of kitchen and bathrooms and taking out trash and recycling; doing laundry with core members; doing things around the house with core members like baking, painting, playing Wii, knitting, watching sports, watching movies, playing basketball outside; and, possibly, working in the garden (if Assistant enjoys that).

Special skills, education, or background desired:

Mostly looking for patient and compassionate individuals who can show up on time and be present when they arrive. Assistants need to be flexible as core members’ needs can change quickly.

These backgrounds are not required, but individuals with a background or interest in Psychology, Nursing, Social Work, Theology, Occupation Therapy, and Physical Therapy have gravitated to L’Arche in the past. However, we believe this experience to be transformative for anyone considering any field. The core members will teach you about love, acceptance, and vulnerability quickly.

We provide lots of training (CPR/First Aid, Medication Administration Level 1, Positive Behavioral Supports, HIPAA, Abuse and Neglect, How to write case notes in Therapy, and more)

Does this internship require access to a vehicle?

With our homes being a bit of a distance from north city, it might be helpful to have a vehicle to get to work. Each house has its own L’Arche van, so that can be taken when a core member needs to go somewhere. When that van is being used, some Assistants might use their own vehicle (and then receive reimbursement for mileage). A driver’s license will be necessary if corps members will be driving anyone around.

This placement is available through our St. Louis-area program, Deaconess Anne House.
