The Brothers of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist (SSJE) offer internships for young men and women (ordinarily 21-34) at their monastery in Cambridge, MA. The monastery and Emery House, the Brothers’ retreat house in West Newbury, MA offer hospitality and sanctuary to people from all walks of life, many of whom are engaged in active ministries. Internships offer participants the opportunity to participate in the daily rhythm of prayer and work as lived by a contemporary monastic community of the Episcopal Church. Interns join the brothers in their daily worship and assist with various aspects of the ministry of hospitality and care of the houses, gardens and land. Interns engage in regular theological reflection guided by brothers and meet regularly with mentors from the SSJE community. Interns have opportunity to participate in activities sponsored by other young adult ministries in the area and in collaboration with other service organizations.
The SSJE’s Monastic Internship Program is designed for those who:
desire a time of vocational discernment or spiritual reflection
to offer themselves for a time of ministry and service
may not feel called to monastic vows, but desire the experience of immersion and formation in a monastic community for a season of life.
Internships are ordinarily September through May. Participants are provided full room and board, health insurance (if needed) and a monthly allowance of $100 for incidental expenses.
