The Rhinelander Volunteer Project (RVP) is a yearlong (50 week) residential service program for young adults. Set at The Church of the Holy Trinity, the Rhinelander Volunteers live together in community, work in the Yorkville and East Harlem neighborhoods with people living on the margins, and become formed as leaders for the church and the world.

The RVP is named for Serena Rhinelander, the benefactress of The Church of the Holy Trinity, who originally founded the parish as a settlement church for German and Eastern European immigrants. Due in part to her influence, Yorkville was a German neighborhood for much of the Twentieth century. Her commitment to making Yorkville a thriving neighborhood where people at the margins were cared for inspires us to this day, as we work at the margins today. Our volunteers live and work in the neighborhood that Ms. Rhinelander helped to create, and reflect on the experience of serving in the shadow of the wealth that the Upper East Side is known for.

Our volunteers spend four days each week working in direct service in Church’s neighborhood, and spend one day focused on leadership development. Many of our placements are at social service agencies that have their roots at the Church of the Holy Trinity. Each volunteer will have a mentor with experience in business/nonprofit management, and will participate in retreats with volunteers from other programs for cooperative learning and reflection.
